Joslyn Richardson

Originally from Manhattan, Joslyn was raised on a remote farm in the Dominican Republic. With no electricity or television, her entertainment was the jungle around her. Her days were often spent crawling on the ground, closely observing the teeming island life. She is currently studying botany on an island in Maine, and she believes that her love for plants comes directly from those days of endless observation.

Joslyn's Statement

My happiest moments in life are centered around family and friends, making things, and looking at plants through a microscope. Metalsmithing and jewelry-making happily combine those last things for me, as I often find myself replicating in metal the self-similar shapes I see in plant forms and cells. I feel that I cannot escape those shapes and lines, as they appear in all of my work, from my embroidery to photography, my pen and ink to watercolor. I am always happy to have a new medium to explore, and in the case of jewelry, the special challenges that arise in the complex processes of metalsmithing are the most rewarding creative puzzles I have encountered yet.
