Maureen's Statement
Commemoration, fanciful design and experimentation with materials are the themes I work with in my craft. I consider myself to be a metalsmith, but I also work with other media such as hand built pottery, leather, photography and video.
I seek to make objects that are inviting and thoughtful in concept as well as in form. I find inspiration in the world that surrounds me: in found objects, natural forms, industrial shapes and architecture. Much of my current work deals with issues of commemoration and memorials, either in a straightforward approach such as my hand built urns, or in a more whimsical fashion as with my containers and jewelry.
Each piece I create is the result of playful visual exploration. My work as a balance of edgy and whimsical design, created with diverse techniques, materials and metals.
I respond to my materials with ideas. My mission is to find paths to make them both sing. I find it simple to follow my bliss, because my bliss is my studio practice. When my work makes me smile, I know I'm on the right path.
